While veterinary medicine has been practiced and taught since
animals were domesticated (see the World Association for the
History of Veterinary Medicine, ), programs in zoo/wildlife veterinary medicine are of
much more recent origin. Many veterinary schools offer at
least short rotations in zoo or wildlife medicine. However,
there are a number of universities offering more extensive
coursework, residencies, or other opportunities to learn about
wildlife or zoo animal veterinary care. In North American,
they include:
University of Guelph
The University of Montreal School of Veterinary Medicine
University of Prince Edward Island Atlantic Veterinary College
University of Saskatchewan Western College of Veterinary Medicine
Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine
UC, Davis SVM Wildlife Health Center
Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine
and Biomedical Sciences
Cornell University Wildlife Health Program
University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine
Iowa State CVM: The Wildlife Care Clinic
Louisiana State University SVM Department of Veterinary Clinical
Sciences
