The world does not offer wildlife much safety. Natural disasters
such as severe weather or fire, or occurrences such as attack by
a predator or a fall from a high place cause injuries. However,
the greatest percentage of animals admitted to rehabilitation centers
suffer from human-related injuries.
Any number of misfortunes that can befall a wild animal; the list
includes:
- Animal attacks (e.g. cats, dogs, predators)
- Collisions (e.g. with vehicles, buildings, windows, power lines,
communications towers)
- Contact with hot surfaces or substances (e.g. barbecues, hot
tar)
- Entanglement (e.g. fishing line, fish hook, string, sticky substances,
glue traps)
- Falls (e.g. from nest, tree, building, bridge)
- Fires (e.g. forest fires, grass fires)
- Human cruelty (e.g. confinement, beating, rocks or stones, choking,
cutting)
- Hunting injuries (e.g. from shotgun, rifle, pellet gun, arrow,
slingshot)
- Trapping injuries (e.g. snares, leg hold traps, box traps, glue
traps)
With prompt attention and supportive care, many injuries can heal.
However, injuries cause the animal pain and distress, and if not
addressed, the animal may survive its injury, but expire from the
effects of stress.
