 Chronic Wasting Disease

Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) is a brain disease related to Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy, also known as "Mad Cow Disease." CWD affects elk, mule and white-tailed deer, and has been diagnosed in free-ranging deer and elk, and in captive elk. CWD appears to be caused by an abnormal protein called a prion. It can be spread by close contact between animals and through exposure to a CWD-contaminated environment. The period of time between infection and signs of disease can range from months to years. Signs of CWD in adult animals include tremors, stumbling, increased salivation, difficulty swallowing, excessive thirst or urination and poor body condition. There is no cure for CWD.

Some commonly seen infectious diseases of mammals are:

 Bacterial Diseases
  • Brucellosis (hoofed mammals
  • Clostridum pefringens (ruminants)
  • Leptospirosis (all mammals)
  • Listeriosis (listerial meningoencephalitis: all species)

  • Pasteurellosis (rabbits, rodents, opossums)
  • Salmonellosis (all animals)
  • Streptococcosis (all animals)
  • Tuberculosis (many mammals)
  • Yersiniosis (pseudotuberculosis: many mammals)
  • Tularemia (opossums, rabbits, rodents).
 Viral Diseases
  • Canine distemper (badgers, coyotes, foxes, mink, raccoons, skunks, weasels wolves)
  • Canine Parainfluenza (coyotes, foxes, wolves)
  • Canine Parvovirus (coyotes, foxes, wolves)
  • Calcivirus (lagomorphs [associated with rabbit hemorrhagic disease (RHD)], seals, seal lions, walrus, whales, dolphins, canids, felids, etc.)
  • Encephalomyocarditis (rodents)
  • Feline distemper (Panleukopenia; Parvoviral enteritis: some feline sub-species, badgers, bobcats, mink, raccoons, skunks, weasels)
  • Feline Rhinotracheitis (all felids, other carnivores)
  • Infectious Canine Hepatitis (bears, coyotes, foxes, raccoons, skunks, wolves)
  • Myxomatosis (rabbits)
  • Rabies (Hydrophobia: all mammals)
  • Squirrel Fibromatosis (gray squirrels)
  • West Nile Virus (bats, chipmunks, rabbits, raccoons, squirrels)
 Fungal Diseases
  • Adiaspiromycosis (cottontail rabbits, rodents, mustelids)
  • Ringworm (all mammals)
 Parasitic Diseases
  • Coccidiosis
  • Giardiasis
  • Hookworm
  • Roundworm
  • Sarcoptic Mange
  • Spirochetosis (rabbits)
