Wild animals are beautiful and intriguing, yet much of what they
do, and why they do it, remains a mystery. One thing is clear: the
intricate interactions of animals and other living organisms with
the environment forms the basis of life on earth. They cycle the
energy of the sun up through
the food chain and back down again, ultimately feeding the soil
so that the cycle can begin anew. This cycle involves heat, light,
water and air, and results in the exchange of carbon dioxide and
oxygen. The cycle creates weather and rain and earth's atmosphere.
They are part of the very air we breathe. They are the dispersers
of seed, the pollinators of plants, the recyclers of trees and the
controllers of populations. They do what we cannot, effortlessly,
instinctively and productively. To preserve the planet and ourselves,
we must preserve its wildlife. To do that, we must resolve human
and wildlife conflicts without harming them. We can restore lost
habitat and give them shelter even by doing something as simple
as landscaping our yards with native plants. We can protect their
remaining habitats, their health and their right to life, and we
can care for them when they are in need.
