Studies have shown that our companion animals have a devastating
effect on wildlife. To begin with, pets can introduce
diseases into wildlife populations. And then there is the fact that
cats and dogs are predators-they will instinctively stalk, capture
and kill if given the chance. When our pets engage in these activitie,
they aren't being "bad" or "evil," they are
just being dogs and cats. It's up to caregivers to behave responsibly.
It isn't just the wild animals who pay the price when we allow
our pets to roam. Diseases can also be passed from wildlife to both
pets and their people. And given the chance, some wild animals,
including coyotes, cougars, and some birds of prey, will make an
easy meal out of Fido or Fluffy. Even smaller animals, such as raccoons
or even squirrels, can inflict serious wounds to a dog or cat.
