WI consists of three sections:
There are five types of pages in WI. Click on links to see examples:
- Section
lead pages. Full menu on the left navbar, introduction to
the site in the centre on a theme-coloured background. The right
navbar may or may not include a sub-menu.
- Information pages. Similar to Section lead pages, but with information
on white background. Same left menu bar as Section lead page,
but different right menu bar. Most of the pages on the site are
of this type. The page you are now reading is an Information page.
Because there are no deeper levels to this Help section, a right
menu bar is not necessary on this particular page.
- Datasheets.
Results of database queries. Same header information as Section
lead pages, however the whole body of the page is used to provide
more information in less space. The links that would have been
in the left or right menu bars are now top and bottom, as well
as contained in a "Jump Menu" pulldown near the top
right of the screen (sometimes labelled "Go To.")
- Popup windows. If you've clicked on 1, 2 or 3, you've already
seen them. Popups sometimes link to other sites, but usually link
to supporting information. All our popups can be removed by clicking
"OK" or "Close Window" at the bottom centre
of each popup.
- Hover Help. A small window that will pop up when you hover over
a link like
this one Used to define terms that may not be understood by
all. By using hover help, we can keep the information on the page
to a manageable size, but provide detailed explanations of terms
as well.
Navigation Links
Page Top:
At the top of every page on the site there will be a black bar.
On the left is the WI word logo. Clicking it will take you to the
WI Home page. On the right, are links to Home, Emergency, Site Help
and Contact Us pages.
Page Bottom:
At the bottom of each page, the top-of-page links are repeated.
Left-nav bar:
 The
left-nav bar will contain all the main menu items for a section.
No matter how deep you delve into that section, this bar will remain
the same. The picture shows that we are in the Rehabilitation section
of the site (it's the first item in the list,) and we are on the
Education sub-menu - as evidenced by the Education wordmark, and
the fact that the coloured cursor covers the Education menu option.
If there are other menu items below the Search engine box, they
will be to different, though related areas of the site.
Right-nav bar:
Using the same page as the one above (Education) as an example,
this right nav-bar shows the menu items for the Rehabilitation-->
Education portion of the site. Not all items will have sub-menus
like this one, and some may even have several layers of them. However,
as mentioned above, although this right-nav menu may change, the
one on the left will always remain the same, and represent the top
level menu for the section that you are in.
Bread crumbs:
What we affectionately call "bread crumbs" is a menu
bar that follows you as you track your way through the site. As
you move through WI, you can get quite far away from the Home Page.
The bread crumps can help you find your way back. Looking at the
two examples above, we have gone to the Rehabilitation section of
the site, selected the Education menu item, and let's say we just
clicked on "Internships" in the menu above rignt.
 The
"bread crumbs," circled in red, allow us to track our
way back all the way to the Home Page if necessary. Although this
example is only three menus away from the Home Page, it is possible
to have "bread crumb" links that are seven levels deep.
Hopefully, this will allow you to move around areas of interest
quickly and efficiently.
Jump Menus:
When you are really "drilling down" into the site, the
left and right- nav bars become inadequate. In cases like these,
and in most cases where we have a datasheet showing database information
(these datasheets have no nav bars left or right) then we provide
a Jump Menu near the top right of the page. In the example shown,
we are on the
Rehabilitation-->Wildlife Care-->Medical Care-->Diseases
page of the site. You can go even deeper into the site by selecting
one of the menus on the right, or go back by selecting one of the
items on the pulldown menu, which has been expanded in this picture
by clicking on the down-facing arrow to the right of the "Wildlife
Care Menu" text. The left-nav menu is still there on most pages,
but adding the Jump Menu allows you the flexibility of finding any
item that may be remotely related to the area you are now reading.
Search Engine:
 Every
page has a Search engine link on the left-nav bar. This search capability
allows you to find any area of the site that matches a word or phrase.
As we develop WI further, we will also allow full database searching
through the Search engine.
Where pages are very long we also provide a table of topic headers
at the top of the page.
Understanding the navigation system will allow you to use WI to
best advantage.
And those six Home Page links on most every page?
- The word logo on the left of the top black bar
- The navigation menu on the right of the top black bar
- There will be one below the Search on the left-nav bar
- There will be one on the "bread crumbs" bar near the
top of the page
- On the menu at the very bottom of every page
- If there is a WI logo at the top of the right-nav bar (there
is on this page,) clicking on it will usually take you to the
Home Page.
